No, I'd forgotten that.

I suppose that if we want to have accurate download links for the latest unstable releases as part of the stable lilypond-web info docs, then you'd need to update stable/2.16/VERSION:VERSION_UNSTABLE whenever there's a devel release. And, of course, make a new stable release for each devel release, and of course get package managers to make a new lilypond version.

I figure that's a losing battle. We could circumvent the first step there by checking for the latest versions online (only if there's an http connection, though). But then there'd still be the problem of the delay of making a stable release, and the delay of distribution package managers.

Basically, I can't see any way to keep the devel download links accurate (especially for a printed pdf of lilypond-web.pdf!), so I don't think it's worth fussing about it. I still like the idea of possibly updating these values via an http connection during the build, but we'd still need a fall-back value in case somebody is building lilypond without internet access.
