Thanks Arun!  I can confirm that this patch works for me on 12.04 with
tip of libunwind.  Thanks a lot for your efforts in getting to the
bottom of this.  We will integrate this patch and begin testing with
it right away, and I will report back if we encounter any problems.
Unfortunately, I don't think our uses of libunwind will address
whether or not the patch has an impact on performance though.

Let me know if I can do anything do to help carry this fix to commit--
additional testing, make it optional if there are performance
concerns, etc.
