Agreed.  Applied to HEAD.

Thanks for persevering with my stubborness :-/

I usually end up doing CC="gcc -foo bar" ./configure to get around libtool being a little odd about it's passing of arguments. It seems like recommending this approach would be appropriate for some of the flags anyway.

Of course, we could also note "If you find yourself having to do this, please send a note to bug-libtool with the datails."
