Yeah.  I'll buy that, especially for hosts where fork is expensive, and
there is a precedent for this in libtool funcs already... see - --patch-181.

I have witnessed that under Windows, libtool can run as slow as the C compiler, and sometimes even slower. In other words, the C compiler does an optimized compile of a C source file in less time than libtool takes to invoke it.
