Sometimes even rerunning the test doesn't fix the problem -- if there
is detritus in the test install directory for instance, the
?demo-unst.test will always fail. On the other hand I have only ever
got into this situation by ^C-ing part way through the testsuite.

Woah! You are in new territory here, man. In theory, a pair of
different VPATH builds sharing a source directory shouldn't clash --
but seeing is believing ;-)

I used to use it, but turned it off when I found that it broke libtool
on Cygwin (because of the grep expression used to extract the embedded
sources used on that platform). Once I understood why (several months
later) I had forgotten that I was no longer using it... I'll edit my
.emacs presently =)O|
