that is somewhat of a misconception though - anyone can run
their own email service - the fact that most people use
commercial providers is nothing different than the fact that the
vast majority of mastodon users do not run their own instance,
but flock to a single provider such as mastodon.social
all email services inter-operate (or federate) with each other in
very much the same way as mastodon or gnu-social, regardless of
who owns the box
