For the sake of the archives the solution to this is

| (setq mail-sources '((file :path "/var/mail/boudiccas")
|                      (pop :server "mail.pooh.bear"
|                                         :user "winnie@pooh.bear"
|                                         :password "rhubarbandcustard")))
`----

This will then download all the system mails at the same time as the normal
emails.
