Hard to say, but my first guess would be that the network connectivity
isn't correct from the VirtualBox machine.  Snoop the network traffic
on the wire, and see if (a) there is any for nntp, and (b) if there's
any response.  Also, take a look in the Messages buffer in case there's
more information.
