What happens if you remove the nnml definition?

Hm, I thought that would govern it. I.e. the node "Fetching Mail" in the
manual says:

  "If this variable is `nil', the mail back ends will never attempt to
   fetch mail by themselves."

Did you configure imap-splitting?
