Consider using .authinfo
e.g

| gnus-select-method '(nnimap "mymail"
| (nnimap-stream ssl)
| (nnimap-address "imap.myhost.net")
| (nnimap-authinfo-file "~/.authinfo")
| (nnir-search-engine imap))

And .authinfo is documented in the info file, but of the form:
