getting mail from spool broken?

Hello

This might be something for an all-emacs news group, not sure. Apologies
if I am in the wrong group...

I'm using Gnus v5.13, and an hour or so ago upgraded to a very recent
emacs from cvs. (http://emacs.orebokech.com/ )

This upgrade seems to have broken gnus getting mail from the local 
/var/mail/gijs

If I start gnus, I get

Mail source (file) error (stringp).  Continue? (yes or no
if yes, I get the usual gnus, but there is not mail fetched from the
spool. Hittin [1-5]g (1g, 2g etcetera) gives the same error. 


switching on debuging and [1-5]g gives:

Debugger entered--Lisp error: (wrong-type-argument stringp (or (getenv
  "MAIL") (expand-file-name (user-login-name) rmail-spool-directory)))
  file-truename((or (getenv "MAIL") (expand-file-name (user-login-name)

What to do?
