Try this instead:

(setq message-kill-buffer-on-exit t)

C-h v shows:

|Documentation:
|*Non-nil means that the message buffer will be killed after sending a message.
|
|You can customize this variable.
|
|Defined in `message'.

which is what I think you are saying.
