There are better mailers for that sort of person.  I'd probably
recommend Mozilla Thunderbird these days, but there's Eudora, Apple's
mail.app, Outlook, Evolution, ...

Gnus is a powerful, and hence complicated, mail/news system.  It
regains a little straightforwardness by being written/customizable in
elisp, which a new Gnus user might be familiar with already by having
tweaked their Emacs.  I don't think it's intended to be a system for
people with no computer skills, and I don't think the project should
substantially move this way.

(The next two questions then are "it's ugly!" and "it's so slow!", and
I think we're not rewriting Emacs to fix those.  :-)
