(perhaps it is obvious to everyone, but it seems I understood the
question different to the others, thus, I want to add to the OP:)
Execute the "cvs -d ... init" *after* you have untarred the repo on the
new machine, not before. Then, this command will update the CVSROOT to
the "newer format" (so to speak). Do not execute this command before
untarring the repo.
