You probably want to look at CVSNT (GPL/free just like CVS, runs on 
Linux/Unix/Windows etc).

CVSNT is more similar to Perforce in that it has user defined change sets and 
supports reserved as well as unreserved versioning.

CVSNT client is bundled with TortoiseCVS which is reasonably easy to learn to 
use and has a tutorial on the web site.

TortoiseCVS and CVSNT have separate newsgroups - so if you do decide to go that 
route be sure to ask your questions in the appropriate forums.

I am a software developer who has used perforce on
Windows for almost 6 years for source control &
versioning.

Am trying to learn CVS now & the few beginners tutorials
I have read leave me rather confused. Does anyone know
of a site or tutorial for CVS which explains it from the
perspective of a perforce user.
