get rid of bad branch

Hello,

I was working in a development branch and when I finished I created a
new "release" branch but forgot to merge back my dev work into the
main line before doing so.  Now, I have this useless "release" branch.
How can I "back out" that branch, so that I don't inadvertently go
into it at some point in the future?
