You're looking in the right place. Have a look at the various
***_authenticate_connection() functions in server.c
You may find the document doc/cvsclient.texi helpful: it documents the
client/server protocol. The makefile can build .ps, .txt and .pdf files
as well, if (like me) you'd rather not read the raw LaTeX files :=)
