Diff skips files that don't exist locally?

Hello. I'm trying to diff my working copy against another branch.  
There's a new directory in that branch, which doesn't yet exist in my  
working copy. It contains several new files. But when I do "cvs diff - 
r branchName moduleName", it doesn't mention anything about the new  
directory, or the files in it. Is there a way to get it to recognize  
the new directory?

My purpose is to to write a script that will report on the  
differences between the two branches.
