time cvs -d /home/cvs/cvsroot co tools/xxxx/xxxx/xxxx/docs/xxxx.pdf
real 3m26.161s
user 3m23.930s
sys 0m0.130s

run remotely, thereby showing different numbers for "user" time spent).
Oh, and something I forgot to put in the first email:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
$ ls -lh tools/xxxx/xxxx/xxxx/docs/xxxx.pdf
-rw-r--r-- 1 jberanek jberanek 3.0M Mar 17 12:55
tools/xxxx/xxxx/xxxx/docs/xxxx.pdf
