But then, there is a surprising lot that human beings can live
without. You could wear a loincloth and live in a cave, hunting your
dinner using sticks and stones, and not year for, nor even know, anything
else.
Since, therefore, civilization itself is not a necessary feature, it's
pointless to squabble over whether directory versioning in a version
control system is necessary. Progress is not created by necessity,
but just by doing cool stuff for the hell of it, and for convenience
and profit.
