how to checkout/update file to older revision without sticky tag |

i am trying to write some scripts for our project which
will checkout/update our personal cvs trees to certain states
based on a tag. however, if i checkout or update to an older
version of a file which is not the head the sticky bit gets set.
how can i do this without setting the sticky bit? For instance,
if i have a file named "file1". I want to be able to checkout/update
to and older version of the file and have cvs behave as if i
had always had that older version and other people had just come
in and checked in newer revisions. (so status would read: Needs Update)
Does anyone have any suggestions. The faq suggestion doesn't work
beacuse it would overwrite the current revision with the older one.
