Does this happen with files that fit into the old DOS
8.3-monocase naming scheme, or ones that don't, or some of each?
I'm really reaching here ... but can't help wondering if it might
have something to do with VFAT's kludgy way of supporting long
filenames -- you know, how the "real" directory entry is munged
into 8.3-uppercase, with a secondary entry containing the
original unmunged name, and the file can be accessed by either
name.  Perhaps under some circumstances WinCVS uses the munged
name.
