Don't use ``id'', use CVS's $USER internal variable:
ALL (echo ""; echo $USER; date; echo %{sVv}; cat)
>>$CVSROOT/CVSROOT/commitlog
(Note that I also used the $CVSROOT internal variable to avoid
hard-coding the repository location.)
