Is the imortal words of HACKING:

        * What is the schedule for the next release?

There isn't one. That is, upcoming releases are not announced (or
even hinted at, really) until the feature freeze which is
approximately 2 weeks before the final release (at this time test
releases start appearing and are announced on info-cvs). This is
intentional, to avoid a last minute rush to get new features in.

Most of the changes in the current development version are bug fixes or
small enhancements. It's been passing all of the nightly testing
(interested parties are invited to subscribe to the test-release mailing
list -- see HACKING for details), so it's not all that dangerous. The
single biggest change is to the build procedure (it now uses Automake),
so if you can get it to build, you're probably in good shape. (And if
you *can't* get it to build, please send details to bug-cvs so we can
fix it!)
