"Small businesses respond and adapt to ever-changing market conditions at a rate that puts most big businesses to shame. While size is obviously a factor in their success, it certainly makes things easier when the owner and staff share the same goals and contribute directly to the bottom line."

  Building a better business
Measuring business performance
Achieving your goals can be the most satisfactory part of running a business. Many successful big businesses re-assess their procedures, decisions and directions constantly. You too can benefit from this thinking by getting in the discipline of regularly reviewing your business's performance, preferably on a monthly basis. If you're unsure where to start, and you're running your business on an accounting software package, then have a look at some of the built-in reports. 'Sales' and 'Receivables Ageing' reports are amongst the most helpful.   With regular meetings - preferably away from the distractions of work - you can look at every facet of your business, from financials right through to the nuts and bolts. Through this process, you'll discover areas and processes you can improve, enhance and refine. Finally, if you have the chance to brainstorm with others, do so - as the saying goes, 'Three heads makes wisdom'.You'll be surprised at how discussion and a different perspective can lead to a better business.

Manager's Tips
Are you managing your customer relationships?
Take time to analyse your customers in terms of who they are, how they found you, what they like and how much they've spent with you. Look for ways to improve the relationship, as this will keep you ahead of - and them away from - your competition. For instance, if customers have dropped away, ask yourself why and devise a marketing solution that attracts them back to your business - it's much easier to return a neglected customer to the fold than acquire a new one.
