He cant say more than is said in thatpoem, or in
that letter of his publishers.
It was founded in memory of a very great traveller
whodhave dared Hell itself. Or, rather, were she and all this Englishbusiness some
rude interval of waking? Pistache is myfavourite-chocolate filling.
The workings of a misogynists mind arenot for us to
pry into, except in Vienna. Bowing to Yule, Dinny turned towards the
door.
Wilfridsvoice behind her said:Well, youve got a
tenner on. She heard Wilfrid say in a low voice:What a coward and cad you are!
SIR,You will agree that the matter of this afternoon cannot restthere. So THAT, she
thought, is what they wanted me for.
Yet for the honour of English race May I not live
or endure disgrace . Amidst the silence and discomfiture those two stood smiling at
eachother.
Dinny sank down on the car seat, and said
quietly:Drive on, please.
Almost certainly hell be expelled under rule
whatever it is.
Wilfrid took out his hands, let the cigarette drop
from his lips, and nodded. CHAPTER XXIIJack Muskham occupied a bedroom at Burtons
Club when racing kepthim overnight in town.
I suppose, said Dinny, with spirit, he wont see, on
reflection, that hes more to blame than Wilfrid? And there issomething about editors
which makes it certain sometimes that theyare not. Very distasteful, continued the
fourth member, diving intomatters of conscience.
Her hand was still over her mouth, for her lips
weretrembling.
Desert would prefer not to be seenwith me in
public. Would you say Blenheim is higher behind than in front? The horses fate
seemed to her the less dreadful.
The driver remounted and started the car with
ajerk.
She sat with closed eyes till the last notes ofthat
last act had died away, then went up to bed. I dont see the use of it, muttered Jack
Muskham.
Dinny resumed her seat, and they drove slowly
on.
Jack Muskham sat silent, his long face impassive
and his long legsstretched out. Instinctively her hand went out to grasp Wilfrids
arm, but toolate. And they moved toconsideration of important matters.
Well, nice horse, and handy for the
turns.
Its in a third edition, and everybody reading
it.
Dinny replaced the receiver and flew upstairs. She
wandered unhappily abouther room, then took out his photograph. She did not want to
go down and eat, but she must, orBlore and Augustine would be upset.
