well that's interesting.

I wouldn't worry too much about the 'warning... shadows a core library
function' message. just be aware that the package in question may
alter expected behavior of those functions.

what I find a bit strange is that the errors all seems to be tied to
the image package. But the image package does manage to load (or at
least octave thinks so), and others do not. Java and plot are the only
two loaded after image that manage to load...  but why are their
warning messages appearing before the image error messages?

Since it's the only one producing obvious errors, what happens if you remove
pkg load image from the startup file.  What's the pkg list after that?

Also, I don't think the -verbose switch does anything to pkg load.
But I would think a failed pkg load would produce some message... not
sure how to find out what it's trying to do versus what's actually
happening.
