For Yosemite, I strongly encourage using Fink.  The help-list full of many examples of individuals having trouble with both homebrew and Macports on Yosemite.

As long as the version of Xcode is compatible with your version of OS X, it will be compatible with octave. You have Xcode 6.1, which is correct for Yosemite.
