both your comments were right and the suggested "./" at the beginning of the
filename was the best solution for my problem.
Though I am on linux as well, the tab-completion is not smart enough for my
request - I guess this is not an easily - done tast. And yes, I am sure that
the 1644 possible completions stem both from all possible commands and all
local filenames in the current directory.
Nevertheless, the dot - slash does what I actually need and I even do not know
why this did not find it's way into my head before :-).
Thank you for pointing me to this solution and by the way, it works on
perfectly on octave 3.8.1 as well.

if you really want to see the pictures above - use some font
with constant spacing like courier! :-)
