There is no annoyance at least from my part. My suggestion is for you
to install the "octave-octdf" Ubuntu package. From a terminal, this
can be done via
sudo apt-get install octave-octcdf
If you prefer to use a graphical interface like synaptic or Ubuntu
Software Centre, search for the octave-octcdf package there and
install it this way.
