I haven't even tried the function yet - decided to look into code in order to verify whether I correctly understand the documentation.
When I saw the code I decided to ask - my (apparently wrong) assumption was that Octave developers know much better than I and can justify design decisions made by them.
The documentation, by the way, doesn't have examples - please see below. Surprisingly, Matlab documentation _does_ have examples - see http://matlab.izmiran.ru/help/techdoc/ref/interp2.html .

There's no need to be disrespectful, because you didn't get an answer as fast as you had hoped. This will just make people not try or want to answer you. A very simple explanation for the lack of answer can be found in a calendar.
