Well, I have solved my problem by taking drastic action - I installed Debian
and then simply updated to Octave 3.6.2 by using the package manager. This
was the second time I've had problems with trying to get the latest Octave
running on Ubuntu, and as a result I may move both my computers over to
Debian from Ubuntu. Since you can install any customised desktop environment
you like for eye candy, I'm an agnostic as to whether underneath it all it
is Debian, Ubuntu or whatever. I think it's more important to be able to
easily install the programs you want, and for me at least, Debian trumps
Ubuntu in this respect.
