leasqr question

Hi,

The attached image 
http://octave.1599824.n4.nabble.com/file/n4643194/leasqr.png  is the output
of first demo in "leasqr.m". The fit is not a smooth curve and I'm trying to
figure out why? "niter" was set to 50, and when I increase this variable,
Octave (3.6.1 on XP mingw) crashes regularly (same goes for decreasing
minstep and/or maxstep).
How do I get a smoother fit?
