What's an IP lawyer? One that specialises in copyright and patents and
trademarks and industrial designs and moral rights and droit d'auteur
and regional designations and trade secrets? Does any lawyer actually
do all of those?

Or does your lawyer friend only do copyright or patents? In that case,
wouldn't she or he only be a copyright lawery or a patent lawyer? The
laws for each of those are generally vast, different, and complicated
enough by themselves that it seems reasonable to me to specialise in
only one of those.

The real problem here is not if the Mathworks can get away with this
or not, but that they're trying at all. It's repugnant that they are
sneakily trying to control what people can do with free code.
