Ah, yes. Quite an awkward situation. Still it would seem that an opportunity
exists to tag the official open-source "GUI" project with something a bit less
literal than "Octave GUI". I'm a newcomer here but it seems like what you are
working on is more than just a "GUI" (e.g. will it not have an integrated
CLI?). Would "Octave IDE" be closer to the actual project goals? Or maybe OXIDE
(Octave eXtensible IDE) ... heh, I'm sure someone could do better.

We're not the ones who chose a name that deliberately confuses users.
We were called Octave before GUI Octave existed, and we've been working on a
GUI before GUI Octave was created. And given the average lifespan for external
GUI projects to be abandoned, GUI Octave probably only has a year to live, or
perhaps pessimistically two. So Octave's GUI will continue to exist when GUI
Octave is abandoned like every other external GUI project has been abandoned.
