I have a cell array that is
Attr Name Size Bytes Class
==== ==== ==== ===== =====
C 10000x4 210000 cell
Saving as hdf5 (which is my default) takes about 70x as many bytes. With
even larger arrays my octave simply dies when loading.
Is that supposed to be normal behavior?

octave's binary format (much smaller).
