Looks like your fontconfig is too old, which is not surprising on RHEL4. I
don't see an option in Octave to disable fontconfig, so you might try
building a newer version yourself. However, note that I (and others) had
some different issues with RHEL5, which comes with gcc 4.1.2 by default, so
I personally updated to a newer gcc altogether. Good luck, hopefully the
updated fontconfig is all you need.
