I've tried this and it doesn't seem to work. It doesn't seem to be working with any of the other command line functions like the matlab compatibility "--braindead" or "--traditional" either. Have I installed it incorrectly or something or is there something else I can do?

If you use octave on windows it depends on a few things. One possibility is that you edit the octave icon with which you start it (or the menu entry) and add the --silent there as a command option (I have no windows here now so I
cannot describe it very detailed).

Just in case you have not figured this out already

right-click, properties, the "target" will be something like
"C:\Octave\3.2.4_gcc-4.4.0\bin\octave-3.2.4.exe". add "--silent" to
the end
