You are getting this message when Octave tries to write the history
file and it fails because of permission problems. I already fixed the
problem the development sources. Now I see this:
$ HOME=/ /usr/local/octave/devel/bin/octave
GNU Octave, version 3.3.50+
Copyright (C) 2009 John W. Eaton and others.
This is free software; see the source code for copying conditions.
There is ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or
