Uh, you guys have lost me completely. The error message I was talking
about has nothing to do with gnuplot, but is pure Octave:

=====================================================================
octave:2>  contourf (x, y, z, -7:9)
warning: meaning may have changed due to change in precedence for && and ||
operators
error: patch: X and Y must be of same size
error: evaluating if command near line 230, column 3
error: called from `contourf:parse_args' in file
`/usr/share/octave/3.0.3/m/plot/contourf.m'
error: called from `contourf' in file
`/usr/share/octave/3.0.3/m/plot/contourf.m'
=====================================================================

Sorry for being unclear in the first place.

        Thomas
