I have just set up a dual boot amd64 bit machine with Ubuntu and XP on it
I am a long time Octave user and have made some contributions.
I want to get a complete Linux (umbutu) set up working so I can be a
better contributer.
Is there some one out there that would take the time to help me get
this working.
( I think we should do this off the list as most of the help I need
is with Linux)
first question :
from ubuntu's package loader I cant find Octave.
Sorry if I'm a little vague, but it's some time I'm not using Ubuntu. What "package loader" have you used? Synaptic? If so, have you enabled all the repo's?
I think the the Debian package might work but I looked at the debian
web site and installed 2 packages but they seem to be only source files.
Is there a running executable that I can get?
Yes, for sure the Debian package migth work. If you use a true "package manager", when you select a single package, all the dependencies are resolved for you. As long as I recall there is a Debian Octave binary package. Not sure about the current version.
If not then how do I compile the ones that I downloaded?
Search for the Ubuntu Wiki for complete guide in the "./configure" "make" and "make install" process. But consider the benefits of having all the package installed in your computer under the control of the package mager. No problems when a single library is upgraded or replaced during one of the system update or when you manually install some other package
