Yeehaa!  That fixed it, thanks!  Now I have to figure out how to have titles
work.

BTW I had the same problem with the /usr/local version of octave from 
  http://hpc.sourceforge.net/
.. so apparently the problem is not octave.app, but as you say the
gnuplot/aquaterm part of the world.
