Just to make this thread complete, this problem was fixed a while ago.
Get:
http://velveeta.che.wisc.edu/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/octave/emacs/octave-inf.el
byte compile it (M-x byte-compile-file ) and copy all to
Emacs/lisp/progmodes/
