You should better try to install octave-2.9.12. There have been a lot of 
changes since 2.9.9 especially on the Mac side. I think you should have a look 
at the canonicalize_file_name function - it shouldn't work on your system but 
it does work very well with 2.9.12.

Which OS X binaries? Fink, MacPorts, HPC, HMUG...?
