OK, so this is possible in 2.9....  Great.  Thanks for the advice,
Geordie and Dmitri. :-)

I'll have to look at upgrading, currently I use 2.1.73.  The latest in
the Ubuntu repositories is 2.9.6 so (since it's not urgent right now)
I'm tempted to wait for Feisty to come out rather than mess around
installing from source.

On a related topic, is there a (rough or firm) estimate for when Octave
3.0 will be out?

Last, what other methods than gzipped ascii could I use to store large
datasets?  Would a MySQL database be worthwhile, for example?
