I don't know the full answer to your question, but I think it would have 
something to do with using __gnuplot_raw__ or __gnuplot_set__ with the 
"with linewidth" command 
(http://www.sunsite.ualberta.ca/Documentation/Gnu/gnuplot-3.7.1/html_node/gnuplot_107.html).
