Seems like a good guess, but it really should be standard. If not
Gedit will not be able to pick the right syntax highlighting without
/etc/mime.types being altered.
According to the /etc/mime.types file in Debian testing, it can also be added
to a ~/.mime.types file which would be significantly easier for individual
users.
