It depends. General language compatibility is a goal, but bug-for-bug
compatibility is not. Also, it is a question of resources. If you
find that you are using Octave for a significant portion of your work,
or you would like to see Octave improve to the point where you can use
it for your work, please consider contributing to the project in some
