There are other algorithms for generating Rayleigh distributed fading
coefficients, which may or may not be of use for you, and may or may not
be faster. See attachment.

On a related note, I'm not confident about ignoring the phase of the
fading, but I'm an undergraduate, so I'll welcome any (possibly private)
explanations on that.
