No, Matlab variable names are truncated to 32 characters, independent of
whether they are saved or not. Octave always arbitrary length names... There
under matlab you have
m234567890123456789012345678901234567890=1
m234567890123456789012345678901 =
1
>> save crap m234567890123456789012345678901234567890
>> clear all
>> load crap
>> whos
Name Size Bytes Class
m234567890123456789012345678901 1x1 8 double array
Grand total is 1 elements using 8 bytes
>> m234567890123456789012345678901234567890
m234567890123456789012345678901 =
1
>> m234567890123456789012345678901
m234567890123456789012345678901 =
1
This is the reason for the issue. Send a bug report to mathworks, this has
nothing to do with octave...
